Volunteer Week: Jenny's story

Hi All, my name is Jenny Timms, I am a volunteer for FMA UK, as a Regional Co-Ordinator for the Midlands area.

I have followed FMA UK for many years as I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2000.

Then recently I came across an advert for my role, on the FMA UK website. I then applied and was given an interview, which I was successful in and was then offered the position.

During my time as Regional Co-Ordinator I have been given several opportunities.

One being given training and further learning about the benefits system, which I take a great interest in as I know how our condition can greatly affect our incomes and therefore our life!

I am part of the helpline team, which is a great opportunity I enjoy as during my working years before my condition worsened, I thrived in positions helping and supporting others and I deeply missed being able to do this. Speaking with the lovely people that I do through our helpline brings me closer to my old-self and taking part in the volunteering for the FMA UK has given me purpose again, making me feel better for the responsibility I have to those in need of support.

I have also had the chance to travel around the Midlands area to meet some of the support groups and its many wonderful members.

My favourite part of the role is being able to help others get further education on the condition that is Fibromyalgia. I love advising support group managers to successfully set up new groups for those to access, all whilst gaining further knowledge from other volunteers such as the trustees and other staff members.

I would encourage anybody to volunteer for this fantastic and hard-working organisation, no matter how little time you may have to offer, as every little minute helps.

The FMA UK team continuously pull together and support their volunteers endlessly so that you feel part of Fabulous ‘Fibro’ Family!
