FMA UK Elects New Chair

FMA UK has elected a new Chair at the July Trustees meeting. Pam Stewart, long-standing chair has stepped down from being chair but will continue as a trustee. Des Quinn, who has been the Vice-Chair for a number of years has been elected chair of FMA UK.

The Board of trustees would like to thank Pam Stewart for her outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment over the years in leading FMA UK. She has been an effective advocate for people living with fibromyalgia and her tireless work in helping to run the charity and meeting local support groups, patients, politicians and various stakeholders. She has raises the cause of better care for those affected by fibromyalgia to new levels.

Pam has been involved with the charity in some form or another since the charities inception and took over the role of chair in 2004. Pam’s contribution has been enormous and she is an excellent example of leadership of a small charity.

Pam said “ Working with others to improve the situation for people with fibromyalgia has been a tremendous challenge.  It must seem to people newly diagnosed that the position is still terrible but compared with 20 years ago it has improved.  Although there are still some professionals who deny its existence and others who are unaware of the current treatment options there are many others who are interested in seeing an improvement and much research is being done in the UK as well as the rest of the world.

European and international organisations are more aware of fibromyalgia being a more common condition and by joining with their initiatives we can achieve so much more.  My hope for the future is that here in the UK more sections of the fibromyalgia community can work together and make a greater impact than working in isolation.

Although I am moving to Dubai the electronic age means I can still be in touch, although I will not be able to represent FM at meetings in same way I have done.   Others will be taking on the roles that need this personal touch and I am certain they will ensure the F word gets mentions as often as possible.

There is no organisation for FM in Dubai yet, but a rheumatologist from there who was at the British Rheumatology conference in Manchester has asked me to get in touch!

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me both personally and charity wise.  Every effort however small can make so much impact – a simple well done on a bad day can make all the difference.  Please help whenever you feel able.”

Des Quinn, the new Chair of FMA UK said: ‘’Having been a part of FMA UK for some time I am sure that along with our current crop of trustees that the fibromyalgia cause will continue to be advanced. The work that Pam Stewart has done over the years cannot be underestimated and I will be glad of her counsel going forward as she remains as a trustee. I would like to wish her all the best as she takes more time to enjoy life with her family while still helping contribute to the charity.
