Read Michael's story: ''I am running the Reading Half Marathon in April 2016 to raise money for Fibromyalgia and increase awareness of the condition, so more people understand the struggles that those with Fibromyalgia go through on a daily basis. I became involved with the Reading Fibromyalgia support group through my business. I own Floating Point Float Centre in Reading, the only dedicated Float Centre in Berkshire where a number of Fibromyalgia patients have come to float for pain relief.
In 2011 there was a study undertaken in the US that highlighted the great benefits Float Therapy can offer Fibromyalgia patients. The results showed that patients reported an average 30% drop in stress levels after each float session, with an average of 2.5 days of pain relief.
The duration of pain relief appeared to increase with each float session; I have had a client who reported no pain for 18.5 hours post float and 80% of our clients with Fibromyalgia felt the benefits immediately after their float and for days after the session. There is currently a new study in the US underway as we speak and we are excited to see what the results tell us.
Because I am in the business of relaxation and helping people, this is why I approached the local Fibromyalgia support group. I had the opportunity to help a group of people who needed relief and to be pain free. I contacted the group to try and offer an alternative to their current pain management programme. They invited me to give a presentation on 2 occasions and during this time I have become friends with a couple of members supporting me in my training. All the people I have met are fantastic and it is great that they have a strong support network, they have welcomed me into the group and I am proud to be running the Reading Marathon for FMAUK to raise money that will help with much needed research in the UK.
