On Sky News they have an article about Carly Barton becoming the first UK patient to be prescribed Cannabis under the new guidelines published in November. She has Fibromyalgia and it was prescribed by a private pain specialist.
While it is great to see movement on this and for someone with fibromyalgia having access to new treatments, we are concerned about the confusion over the rushed guidance with the official NICE consultation process on future guidance only starting after the November guidelines are in effect.
Consultants are unsure of the evidence base and about the rules they are prescribing under. Further to this it is beyond the reach of most fibromyalgia patients to afford £2500 for a 3 month supply and this will force people to the street to try cannabis and risk a conviction.
FMA UK is participating on the guidance review conducted by NICE and will be feeding back our thoughts and those that were submitted by people on our recent survey on the subject.
