How Coventry Fibromyalgia Support Group Started

At the age of 68, Janet Farr, was finally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia - she believes she has had fibromyalgia all her life.

Janet attended fibromyalgia classes at Coventry and Warwick university hospital, she was the eldest there at 68 and was amazed at the amount of young people that were there. Everyone was asking what support was available after the classes had finished, so Janet decided to start a support group in Coventry.
 
Janet went home and did some research and went along to a big conference in Liverpool where there were plenty of speakers.
 
Janet put her own money into starting the support group up, she had leaflets and cards printed advertising the group and the hospital got involved too. The hospital started to send women and men along to the group, there was finally somewhere to go for support and advice after the classes had finished at the hospital.
 
In the meantime Janet applied for a £2,000.00 grant, she was successful and this enabled her to set the group up officially.
People started to meet at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and there she made friends with Debbie, she helped Janet set everything up. At the beginning there were 6 – 8 people that came along. It was originally an evening get together but Janet soon realised that mornings would be better. As there was more and more people coming along she looked for a bigger venue, which was Central Hall, Warwick Lane and from that day to this the support group still runs there, every 2nd Tuesday of the month.
 
The group has been running for almost 12 years now and there have been and still is hundreds of members that have come through the doors for support and advice.
In June, Janet celebrate her 80th birthday, so as a special friend and founder of the group she was presented with a bouquet of flowers to show how grateful we are to Janet starting the group because if it hadn’t been for her there would be many people in Coventry and surrounding areas that would not have had/have support in learning to live with fibromyalgia.
