Shawn: Volunteering for FMA UK

For Volunteers week 2022, we asked our office volunteer Shawn a couple of quick questions about being a volunteer with the charity.

What is my volunteer role?

Once a week, I volunteer for FMA UK. My role is pretty similar to clerical assistant – I do tasks in the office such as the mail and franking items. I also help with making mail packages and parcel orders to people that request information.  Also, I do computer entry on the spreadsheet to log outgoing mail.

When did you start volunteering?

I think it was in 2018 that I started.

What was it that made you volunteer?

The reason for volunteering was for work experience I have been out of work for mental health reason and my social worker wanted me to take classes or education like a ECDL course and get some work experience like working for FMA.UK  I chose to stay on as a volunteer to get more experience and structure and my mental health wasn’t really that good at the time so I need to push myself more to get used to the working environment

What do you enjoy most as a volunteer?

More sense of purpose and helping out with a good cause. It also helps with breaking up my week with something to do and getting out of the slumber I’m in. I find that volunteering is helping better me and is rewarding from a social purpose.
