People within the fibromyalgia community are often searching for help with their condition and often have more answers than questions. We know from people that attend support groups or participate in online support groups that the web is a source of information when the medical professional is not able to answer their questions.
Therefore, it will come as no surprise that if we were to look at what google records as popular for health related searches that fibromyalgia appears in the list. However, when Dr Morton’s medical help line was conducting research as part of its market research they were keen to find out what people were searching for online about medical conditions. Expectations were that common complaints like the cold and flu would feature as well as the bigger concerns like cancer.
Fibromyalgia was the most popular term searched for each month in 2015. The viruses Chickenpox and shingles were behind fibromyalgia as most searched for terms with fibromyalgia having 30,000 most than the next term per month. In fact, fibromyalgia was searched for more than 2 million times in 2015. According to Dr Morton’s analysis of the data the fibromyalgia searches accounts for 1% of all searches on medical health items.
FMA UK are working on a survey to gather information from GPs with a view to the data being used to improve the situation that people with fibromyalgia face. Their view along with other medical professionals, and data such as this information show that there is a clear care and knowledge gap in relation to fibromyalgia. We will continue to push this subject to the top of the agendas of those people that can make a difference.
