Maidenhead Awareness Day Event

Maidenhead Fibromyalgia Support Group held an Awareness Day event in their local shopping mall,  altand Judy Simpson (Chairperson) sent us the following report and pictures. 

We were all so pleased that I had secured a place inside the Nicholsons Shopping Mall in Maidenhead – outside Tescos, so lots of traffic – as the day was windy and wet outside and we would not have been able to attract so many people, who were interested in fibromyalgia, and were happy to spare some time to chat and find out about our support group.

 

I was pleased with the members who had made an effort to turn out on a Sunday. Pippa (Vice Chair) supplied the tables, and her willing husband assembled them and carried chairs etc from our cars. Due to a mammoth effort on the part of FMAUK I had secured some of the new shiny ‘Dotty’ material. With this we covered the tables and I managed to quickly cut out some sashes and used a bit of leftover material as a makeshift scarf for me. Helen Elliot donated the balloons, and blew them up, with the help of her charming husband Eric and they stayed to help. Pat McCara had recently had her second cataract operation and was unable to wear her glasses. This did not deter her from ‘working the crowds’!

We had sorted out a rota for members to come throughout the day and this worked very well. We not only manned the table but circulated throughout the shopping centre, talking to people and offering flyers and our little ‘Business’ cards. My husband, Len, had created these on the computer and we have an endless supply of this cheap way of keeping our phone number and email handy ( this arose as I am always writing down phone numbers on a piece of paper and promptly losing it). People are saying it is so handy to have a little card , which is less likely to be lost. We did not hand out booklets as these are expensive and we felt that they should be reserved for genuinely interested people, rather than just being thrown away (costing both us and FMAUK).

altWe started at 10am and closed down just after 3pm. We were all tired but felt the time spent had been well worthwhile. We have several potential new members, and a lot of people who are going to pass our publicity on to friends and family, who they think may have fibromyalgia. Our place in the shopping mall was free and apart from needing to get an up-to-date copy of FMAUK’s Public Liability Insurance certificate, easy to arrange.
